Fishing Report, May 27
We are closing out May in Montana, and the classic spring roller coaster is still alive and well. While the big valley freestones gave us a brief clearing window during the recent cool-down, the Flathead has jumped back on the rise over the last few days. With the river pushing back up, our local lakes have stepped right back into the spotlight as the most consistent and productive waters around.
How long will this round of runoff last? The smart money says we should see the peak start to taper and things stabilize by the first week of June. That’s our target for now, but May and June are entirely weather-dependent, so we will keep you updated right here as conditions shake out on the water.

Fishing Report, Whitefish
Flathead River: Back on the Rise
Status: Muddy & Rising | Flow: 29,000 CFS | Temp: 51°F
The Flathead has made a massive move, but not in the direction we want. After that brief clearing window during the recent cold front, the sudden spike in valley temperatures has kicked the high-country snowmelt right back into high gear. The river is currently pumping at a heavy 29,000 CFS and climbing. Both the North and Middle Forks are surging with runoff, completely erasing the short window of clarity we had last week.
-
The Reality: We are back to pure “blown out” mud. With the massive volume, heavy turbidity, and floating debris, the main stem is currently off the menu. Based on the current weather patterns, we expect this heavy spring runoff to last until the first week of June before it finally peaks and begins a true drop.
-
The Strategy: Take the big freestone off your radar for now. Don’t waste time trying to force a bite in the mud. With the river completely out of shape, you need to pivot your attention entirely to the local valley lakes—they are currently the most consistent and productive waters around. We will keep you updated right here as conditions shake out and the river finally starts to clear.
Fishing Report, Missouri River
Missouri River: The Quicker Water Shift
Status: Excellent | Flow: 3,260 CFS | Temp: 51°F–55°F
While the freestones are dealing with the rising mud, the “Mighty Mo” is in absolute prime shape. Flows are 3,260 CFS, and with water temperatures now peaking at a beautiful 55°F, the fish have shifted out of the slow, deep slots. They are actively feeding higher up in the water column and moving into faster water.
-
Targeting the Flats and Riffles: With temps hitting 55°F, don’t waste your time dredging the bottom of the deep holes. The active fish have moved up into the quicker, mid-depth water and riffle transitions. Shorten up your indicators or lighten your weight to present your bugs right in the mid-column where the fish are suspended and looking to eat. A classic sowbug or scud lead paired with a pmd nymph is the way to stay in the zone.
-
The PMD Subsurface Push: The big news on the river is that Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) are officially starting to wake up, and they love that quicker water. Even though we aren’t seeing blanket hatches on the surface yet, the trout are already highly keyed into the nymphs moving through the mid-column. Make sure you are actively working PMD patterns—like a Split Case, Frenchie, or a Psycho May—into your nymph setups to capitalize on this pre-hatch bite.
-
The Shallow Nymph Game: As the afternoon water temps peak, the fish are aggressively pushing right up onto the gravel bars, flat shelves, and skinny inside edges. We are talking 2 feet of water or less. Shorten your leader way up, drop down to a tiny weight—or ditch the split shot entirely—and drift your bugs through the skinny water. If it looks too shallow to hold a big fish, that’s exactly where they are stacked up and gorging right now.
