Fishing Report, August 20

August has been fantastic for fishing in the Flathead Valley and surrounding areas. The season’s weather has been cooperative, with consistent temperatures in the 80s and enough rain to keep river levels up and the water cool, which is ideal for trout.

The Flathead River has been a great option, producing solid catches of rainbow and cutthroat trout. The Clark Fork and Blackfoot Rivers have also been fishing well, with guides reporting good conditions. On the lakes, things are also looking great with consistent action.

The forecast for the next 10 days looks like more of the same, with temperatures in the low to mid-80s, so the excellent fishing conditions should continue. It’s shaping up to be a great August for anglers in Western Montana.

Fishing Report, Whitefish

Fishing Report, WhitefishThe Flathead River is in great shape for August! The flows are holding strong at around 4010 CFS, with a significant contribution from the South Fork. The Hungry Horse Dam is helping to keep the main stem cool and well-oxygenated by releasing 2200 CFS at 61 degrees. This consistent flow and cooler water temperature (peaking around 63 degrees on sunny days) is excellent for trout.

Anglers should focus on fast water and the quickest seams, as this is where the fish are holding. Terrestrial patterns are the go-to flies right now, with hoppers, ants, and beetles being the most effective. Look for those areas where the current breaks or where there’s a little bit of turbulence, as that’s where the fish will be stacked up. Think oxygen and cool water…

Fishing Report, Kalispell

Fishing Report, KalispellThe Clark Fork and Blackfoot Rivers are fishing exceptionally well right now. The Clark Fork, located roughly an hour and a half from Kalispell, is in a prime fishing state, with early morning starts being the most productive time on the water. Anglers can find success using both dry-dropper setups and dry flies, and can expect to land some nice rainbows and cutbows, along with the occasional whitefish.

The Blackfoot River is also in great condition. Despite low flows, the fish are strong and active. Small mayflies, along with terrestrial patterns such as hoppers and ants, are among the most effective flies to use.
