Fishing Report, March 17
Fresh from the sun-drenched flats of the Caribbean, where bonefish cruised sand and grass flats and the weather was simply amazing, I’ve returned to the crisp air of the Flathead Valley, Montana. Over the past ten days, guide reports confirm the Flathead River has been fishing exceptionally well, with guides experiencing stellar days. The recent surge in river flows has now settled, leaving the river in optimal condition and likely bringing in a fresh wave of fish. With a forecast boasting sunny intervals and temperatures hovering in the ideal range for this time of year—highs in the upper 40s and lows in the 20s—the Flathead River’s clarity and stability are primed for fantastic angling. This welcome weather pattern ensures the river remains in perfect form, a stark yet exhilarating contrast to the tropical adventures of the past week and a half.
Fishing Report, Whitefish
Surprisingly, ice fishing is still holding up. The cold nights have kept the ice in good shape. The spots we’re using for trips have 14 inches of solid ice, with very little slush. We’re fishing for pre-spawn perch and the occasional pike. I’d expect the ice fishing to be good through the end of the week. Beyond that, it’s hard to say. If the nights stay cold, it could last another week. Surprisingly, ice fishing is still holding up. The cold nights have kept the ice in good shape. Fishing Report, Kalispell
The Flathead River is fishing quite well right now! We had a decent push of water over the weekend that made things a little murky, but the flows are dropping, and the water’s cleared up nicely. That push of water has likely brought in some fresh fish. The Flathead’s flowing at a good 3550 CFS, and temps are reaching a nice 40 on sunny days. I’m expecting the river to fish well through this week and next. We’ll keep an eye on the weather, and I’ll keep you posted. Nymphing is working well right now. Worms and scuds are what they’re going for. As for dries? We saw some rises last week, mostly big bobber chugs… so if you’re willing to put in some effort, you can get ’em.
