Fishing Report, May 14

May has certainly thrown us the classic Montana mix so far – warm spells, rain showers, and even a touch of snow. The recent cool-down and increased precipitation are exactly what our rivers need as we look towards post-runoff conditions. Personally, I’m really hoping this cooler trend sticks around for the rest of the month; give me those 50s and some rain over blazing sunshine and 80-degree heat any day. And the good news is, the weather forecast seems to be leaning towards fulfilling my cool-weather wish!

Fishing Report, Whitefish

Fishing Report, WhitefishYeah, our local river, the Flathead, is still feeling the effects of spring runoff – she’s running high and a bit off-color at 25,200 CFS. The good news is we’ve seen a drop the last few days, likely thanks to those cooler nighttime temps. But don’t get too excited yet, we’ll probably see those flows bump up again as May rolls on. When does all this runoff madness end? Historically, we’re looking at around July 1st. Some years it wraps up a bit sooner, others a bit later, but that’s the general timeframe. So, where do you go while the Flathead’s doing its thing? The local lakes and the Missouri River are both fishing great right now, so those are definitely the go-to spots!

Fishing Report, Kalispell

With the Flathead River currently out of commission due to runoff, the local lakes are definitely the place to be for some action! We’re seeing good fishing for everything from grayling to pike. Rogers Lake, just west of Kalispell, is particularly hot right now for grayling – they’re really eager to eat a nymph rig. A setup with around 7 feet of total length, featuring a balanced leech and a chironomid, has been super effective. If you’re not finding them in one spot, don’t be afraid to move around and locate where they’re cruising. And the pike? They’re fishing pretty well too. Some days are better than others, but now is prime time to chase them. If you’ve ever been curious about targeting pike on the fly, give us a call – we’d love to set up a fun guided trip and show you the ropes!

Fishing Report, Missouri River

The Missouri River is fishing great right now. Whether you’re into nymphing, throwing streamers, or tossing dries, the fishing is good across the board. We’ve been finding success deep nymphing in the mornings, then switching to shallower rigs after lunch. If you’re keen on streamers, it’s definitely producing, but you’ve gotta be willing to put in the work. And here’s a tip: get out there early… like, earlier than you’re probably thinking. That’s when the streamer bite has been best for me, with bright patterns getting the most attention. For the dry fly enthusiasts, the early bird gets the worm (or the mayfly!) – fish are up and sipping those dead bugs at first light. So, if you want the river mostly to yourself and some happy, eager fish, set that alarm and don’t be lazy!
