Fishing Report, May 28

Can you believe May is almost gone? Seriously, where does the time go? It feels like every year just speeds up. Summer’s right around the corner, and then, bam, fall will be here before we know it. But for now, Montana’s been delivering some fantastic weather and fishing. The Flathead River was absolutely on fire last week, though it’s blown out and a no-go at the moment. Good news, though, Our local lakes are fishing great and the Missouri River has been stellar. Looking ahead, we’ve got some warm weather sticking around for the rest of this week, with a nice cool down expected next week.

Fishing Report, Whitefish

Fishing Report, WhitefishThe Flathead River is looking like toast for a while, unfortunately. How long until it’s back in shape? Historically, we’re talking around July 1st, but honestly, I’m thinking it might be a bit sooner this year. It really all hinges on how much rain we get through June. I’ll definitely keep you posted on how the river and runoff situation shakes out.

In the meantime, your best bet is definitely the local lakes. Indicator rigs with balanced leeches and chironomids are absolutely on the menu right now. And speaking of action, pike activity is seriously picking up! We’ve been chasing them all spring, and it seems like their aggressiveness is really increasing – seeing a lot more pike charging down flies and committing to the eat!

Fishing Report, Missouri River

Fishing Report, Missouri RiverThe Missouri has been absolutely fantastic the last two weeks! We’ve seen flows jump to just under 6000 cfs, and that bump has really opened up new water, allowing us to fish different runs to stay on those active trout. We’ve been running long and strong on some floats, then switching to fast and shallow on others. It’s breathed some fresh life into the lower sections of the river, making for some seriously fun water and helping us find some awesome browns.

Bugs are everywhere now too! PMDs are making an early appearance, caddis are in the mix, and we’re even still seeing March Browns popping in a few spots. All these hatches mean the dry fly fishing is solid. Whether you go early, go late, or even in the middle of the day, you’ll find fish looking up. Just remember the golden rules: fly first, no drag, and don’t cast over them – you can definitely get them to eat!
