Fishing Report, November 21

We’ve closed out a phenomenal week of late-season action, landing bigger trout with slow nymphing and streamers, and enjoying great light-tackle action on Lake Superior Whitefish in the Flathead River (6,550 CFS, 43°F). However, a cold front is now headed our way with freezing lows, which will likely cap our local lakes with the season’s first layer of ice. Take advantage of the great late-season fishing we’re having, or get your ice gear ready for the exciting new hardwater opportunities coming soon!

Fishing Report, Whitefish

Fishing Report, WhitefishThe Flathead River is back! After blowing out earlier this week, flows are dropping fast and the fishing is absolutely bonkers. We are currently seeing high-speed action as the river clears, with flows near 6,550 CFS and temperatures around 43°F. Anglers are finding the largest fish tucked into the slow, deep water, but streamer fishing is absolutely solid for targeting aggressive trout holding in the quick seams and banks! This is the prime window for both nymphing and stripping streamers—this incredible late-season bite will not last.

Fishing Report, Kalispell

This week marks the exciting start of our ice fishing season! Our first cold front is headed our way, and the freezing temperatures should finally cap many of our early-season lakes with ice. This highly anticipated freeze is the critical first step toward getting out on the hardwater! We anticipate our smaller, shallower lakes, like Smith Lake or Rogers, to be the first to cap over.

Crucially, early ice is never safe ice. While we are thrilled about the start, it will take dedicated, sustained cold for the ice to reach the minimum 4 inches of clear, solid ice required for foot traffic. Until then, exercise some patience and never venture out alone. Hardwater season is just around the corner!
