Fishing Report, October 22

October is flying by, and the last few weeks have delivered fantastic weather and fishing on both the Flathead and Missouri Rivers, as the fish are noticing the creep of fall weather; the Missouri River is currently hot, with intense bug activity and fish eating aggressively as if winter is closing in, while the Flathead River has also been fishing great, with nymphing being the most productive method for catching bigger cutthroat and the occasional “donkey” rainbow; the favorable weather is expected to hold through Friday before cooling off dramatically with rain and snow, confirming that fall fishing is officially here.

Fishing Report, Whitefish

Fishing Report, WhitefishThe Flathead River is fishing great right now as fall sets in, with current flows around 3,540 CFS!

The most productive method has been nymphing, which is consistently pulling out some of our bigger Westslope Cutthroat Trout. Focus your drifts on the deeper runs and pockets where the cutthroat are settling into. On warmer days there can be some dry fly fishing… Think big bugs in the slow water and you’ll get some chugs. Water temps are dropping so we could see some BWOs popping. Fingeres crossed.

In addition to the cutthroat, the Whitefish fishing is excellent right now. They are grouped up very willing to eat. Whitefish are running 2-4 lbs and pull super hard! It’s a great spinning rod trip.

Fishing Report, Missouri River

Fishing Report, Missouri RiverThe Missouri River is fishing great right now and is only going to keep getting better as the water temperatures continue to drop!

While streamers are starting to get attention, nymphing remains the most productive method. The key to success right now is fishing the shallow and fast water. Don’t overlook those “toilet bowls” (deep, swirling pockets)—the fish are definitely holding in those spots!
