Fishing Report, April 1
Happy April Fools to everyone out there… I’ll spare everyone the shenanigans and get straight to the point… It’s been very warm the last few days and the Flathead River has been fishing great. Flows are 3600 cfs and temps are peaking at 45. Tomorrow it looks like it’s going to be a high of 66. I would expect to see some bug activity tomorrow. BWO’s or maybe even March Browns. I’ll let you know the bugs as we see them on the river.
Fishing Report, Whitefish
The Flathead River is in great shape right now. Flows are perfect and temps are creeping up. Bugs are going to start to move around and start to think about hatching. I would expect BWO’s and March Browns to start to pop. These bugs will be stuffed up in riffles where they live most of their lives being the clingers they are… After a few warm days, I would have expected to see the flows bump up a bit but the forks are still on the drop and the main stem is on a slow drop. All good as long as we keep having these cold nights. As soon as night temps get warm the upper level snow will start to melt and the river will go. For now, and hopefully the rest of April we’re good to go on the Flathead.
Fishing Report, Kalispell
The Clark Fork is not all that far from Kalispell and is fishing well right now. Nymphing is the most productive and there are some fish to be caught on dries. A few bugs moving about and fish are willing to eat them. I’ve seen a few stones and a few fish keying on midges. Purple haze for the win… most of the time. Smith Lake west of Kalispell is open right now but still not fishing that great yet. Water temps are creeping up so it won’t be long until they are on the hunt. Spawning is on their minds and they’ll be eating anytime now. When they decide to turn on some of the bigger fish of the year will show up. We saw a few really good ones this winter so I know they’re in there.
