Over the past week, we had classic mid-August weather across Northwest Montana—bright, sunny skies, some smoky days with warm afternoon temps, and stable river flows. The team at Montana Fishing Guides took full advantage of these conditions, getting our boats out on the water early to hit the less busy mornings.  From Westslope Cutthroats rising to foam hoppers and mayflies along the Flathead to hard-fighting rainbows and cutthroat taken on deep dropper setups on the Clark Fork and Blackfoot, our guides kept the nets busy, and clients hooked up all week long.

Looking ahead to next week, the forecast is shaping up beautifully. We have a welcome cooling trend moving in, and shifting winds are set to clear up the skies across the valley. This break in the weather will push water temperatures right back into the sweet spot.

Fishing Report, Whitefish

Fishing Report, WhitefishIf you’re basing your stay out of Whitefish, you are perfectly positioned for the Flathead River. The Flathead River sits right outside town, delivering quick, convenient access for the Flathead River, where we do 1/2 day and full day trips. If you’re up for a short, scenic drive under two hours, both the Clark Fork and Blackfoot rivers sit right within striking distance. Making the easy run to these other rivers—they consistently yield higher numbers and noticeably bigger trout, giving you a prime shot at landing bigger and more rainbows and cutthroat trout.

Flathead River (Whitefish / Kalispell)

Status: Clear & Low | Flow: ~5,490 CFS | Temp: 60°F

The Flathead is in prime mid-August condition, running exceptionally clear and cold thanks to upstream releases. Westslope Cutthroat are eager to look up, especially along logjams, foam lines, and deep drop-offs.

  • Terrestrials & Spruce Moths: Size 10–14 Hoppers, Flying Ants, Beetles, and Spruce Moths are dominating the surface bite.

  • Tactics: Target shaded morning banks with double-dry rigs (a Chubby or Hopper paired with a small ant or parachute post). During the afternoon heat, slide a tungsten bead nymph 2 to 3 feet below your foam dry fly to pick off trout sitting in the deeper drop-offs.

Fishing Report, KalispellWhen you stay in Kalispell, you’re positioned right at the heart of the region’s best water. The nearby Flathead River gives anglers close access to the Flathead River. If you want to expand your reach, the Blackfoot and Clark Fork are an easy drive under two hours away. Heading out to these neighboring freestones puts you on rivers that typical have bigger and more fish to the net on full day trips.

Blackfoot River

Status: Clear & Good | Flow: ~680 CFS | Temp: 64°F

The Blackfoot’s deep canyon pools and boulder-strewn pockets are fishing great for anglers willing to get on the water in the early morning. Cold early morning water temps make the first half of the day the most productive window.

  • Hopper-Dropper Warfare: Big terrestrial patterns like Morrish Hoppers, Fat Alberts, and Foam Beetles.

  • Tactics: Focus heavily on oxygenated riffles, plunge pools, and shaded overhangs.

Clark Fork River

Status: Prime Mid-Summer Drift | Flow: ~2,600 CFS | Temp: 65°F

The Clark Fork offers long, drift boat and beginner friendly stretches with some great rainbows and cutthroat being caught.

  • Mornings are where it’s at: Dry dropper or dfo… It’s all good right now.

  • Tactics: Single dry or dry dropper rigs in the morning. When it gets warm and weird, stick with it…
