Fishing Report, December 13
The fishing has been pretty solid the last week or so. We’ve been ice fishing in a few of our early-season lakes. The ice thickness has been 4-5” of clear, hard ice. Very safe and fishy. If you’re looking for early ice then think of smaller lakes in the outer colder regions of the Flathead Valley. Big lakes are not frozen yet, we need it colder to cap those lakes. The weather forecast is cold(ish for the next week or so. Some snow headed our way but not much. All said and done it’s a great start to our ice fishing season…
Fishing Report, Whitefish
Some of the lakes north of Whitefish are starting to move into the safe zone. Proceed with caution this time of year, 4-5” of hard ice can change into 2-3” in a matter of a few yards. Use your spud bar and make sure the thickness is good. If you don’t have a spud bar, drill holes every few steps and measure. You can never be too safe in early ice. If you get sketched out then turn around and go back. No need to put yourself in a bad spot this early in the season. Once again, think of the smaller lakes that freeze first. They typically have perch and pike in them. The early season is very active and some of the best of the year. Small pastics for perch and panfish, and tip-ups for pike are my go to.
Fishing Report, Kalispell
West of Kalispell there are a few good options. From perch and pike to grayling and trout. Our spots have good ice and are very safe to fish on. Grayling and cutthroat trout have been active and willing to eat most days. It seems like more delicate presentations are effective when they show up. Yesterday the deadstick was very effective. The day before they wanted it moving a bit… not finding fish? Keep moving. Give each spot maybe 10 minutes if you’re not getting signs of life. Big move and keep looking that way. Once you start finding fish you’ll want to do little moves to hone in on them. Yesterday we did lots of moves to find fish and stay productive.
