Fishing Report, December 14

Another solid week of ice fishing is in the books! Guide Ice fishing trips were super fun and very productive. Perch and pike are what we’re targeting mostly with Grayling in the mix too. We have great ice conditions on the lakes we are guiding on. 5-6” of clear ice is very safe. The weather outlook for the next 7 days is looking nice and cold. With lows in the teens and highs in the 20’s we’ll be making good ice and getting closer to some other lakes that are close but not there yet.

Fishing Report December 14-1

Fishing Report, Kalispell

Smith Lake is starting to make some ice again. it was getting close to 4” but is around 2.5 right now. Soon it’ll be 4 and I’ll get you a report. Rogers Lake is giving up good numbers of grayling. They seem to be very active. Cutthroat trout are pretty elusive out there as of late. I feel there was a big fish kill last winter and the numbers are low. This happens out there and it will bounce back as time goes on. Echo Lake is not close yet and neither are the lakes out west of town. I’ll let you know as I know…If you’re checking out lakes in these areas please exercise caution. Bring a spud bar, drill holes, and check thickness often. You can never be too careful when it’s early.

Fishing Report, Whitefish

North of Whitefish there are some good options for the ice angler. Perch and pike are what we’ve been targeting on trips. We’ve been getting good numbers of perch on trips with some good ones in the mix. I feel like this year we are seeing more of the big perch than last year. Deeper water seems to be the key. Deeper water, bigger jigs, and slow… In deeper water there are fewer fish but bigger ones, find some mud if you can too. Bigger jigs keep the smaller fish away and fish it slow. Big Perch seem to be curious about what’s making that commotion in the mud. Pike seem to be cruizing around. Set tip-ups or Jawjackers on the perimeter and you should hang a few. Set them up away from where you’re fishing, this keeps the noise down so you don’t spook them off
