Fishing Report, February 27
The Flathead Valley is currently offering a premier window for guided excursions, with weather and water quality aligning across the board. Because we are seeing mild afternoons paired with stable ice, guides are able to offer high-success trips regardless of your preferred style.
-
Fly Fishing River Floats: With the Flathead River boasting great mid-winter flows and no shelf ice, drift boat and jet boat trips are in high gear. Guides are finding active trout and having fun… making this an ideal time for a full-day float while the sun is out.
-
Heated Ice Fishing Charters: For those who want the “hardwater” experience without the chill, local ice charters are at their peak. Stable caps on valley lakes mean guides can safely utilize heated luxury huts, targeting consistent perch and grayling bites in total comfort.
-
Multi-Species Spin Fishing: Spin fishing trips are a fantastic “all-rounder” option right now. Guides are successfully targeting everything from trout on the river to lake trout on the open-water portions of Whitefish Lake.
The Bottom Line: This is one of those rare weeks where you can’t make a wrong choice. Whether you want to cast a fly, jig through the ice, or throw spinners, the valley’s professional guides are ready to put you on the fish in prime conditions.
Fishing Report, Whitefish
The Flathead Valley is currently in a rare “triple threat” window where every major angling discipline is hitting its stride. Thanks to a stable weather pattern of mild, sunny afternoons and hard-freezing nights, conditions are ideal for both open-water and hardwater guided trips.
-
Ice Fishing (Stillwater Lakes): The ice up north remains locked in at a reliable 12–15 inches. Our heated luxury hut trips are seeing a high volume of perch, with “jumbos” frequently moving through. Tip-up action for northern pike along the weed edges has been remarkably consistent, making this a perfect high-action trip for families.
-
Vertical Jigging (Whitefish Lake): For those seeking a trophy, the lake trout (Mackinaw) bite on Whitefish Lake is excellent. Guides are utilizing specialized spin fishing gear for vertical jigging in the 140–180 foot depths. White tubes and heavy jigs tipped with cut bait are the go-to, with active fish responding well to the deep-water presentation.
-
Fly Fishing (Flathead River): The river is in top-tier winter shape, flowing at a healthy 3800 CFS with water temps peaking near 39°F. This increased volume is keeping the trout “happy” and feeding aggressively in the slower winter runs. It is a fantastic time for mid-day nymphing or swinging streamers for active, hungry fish.
Guided Trips
We are currently offering premium guided adventures for both ice fishing on our local lakes and fly fishing on the Flathead River. While the hardwater season is starting to wane, the ice remains safe and stable, with a strong jumbo perch bite still in effect. Meanwhile, the river is boasting unseasonably high flows and active, healthy trout, making for some of the best winter fishing we’ve seen.
