Fishing Report, September 3
August truly flew by this year, and the weather played a big role in that. Cooler temperatures and a few rain events kept our rivers and streams in excellent shape, making for some fantastic fishing.
While the last few days have felt more like mid-August than September with highs in the 90s, the forecast is finally shifting. A decent cool-down is on the way, with highs expected to drop into the 70s and 80s over the next week or so. This is exactly what we’ve been waiting for! The classic Montana fall weather will be a welcome change for both anglers and fish, and we’re looking forward to seeing what the next few weeks of fishing have in store.

Fishing Report, Whitefish
The Flathead River is in a truly fantastic state for late-summer fishing, and we’re starting to see the first signs of the fall transition. Flows are holding steady at around 3620 CFS, a perfect level that creates a healthy, well-defined river. This is largely thanks to the consistent flow from the South Fork, which is pumping a significant 2380 CFS into the main stem. This cool, well-oxygenated water is a huge benefit to our trout, keeping them active and feeding even with daytime temperatures peaking around 64 degrees.
When you’re on the water, you’ll want to target the fastest, most turbulent sections of the river—that’s where the happy, well-fed fish are holding. Look for seams, riffles, and flats of quick water. We’re seeing some bigger fall fish starting to move into the river, adding to the already great action.
Terrestrial patterns are still the top choice right now, so make sure your box is stocked with hoppers, ants, and mayflies. This is the perfect time to get out and enjoy a great Flathead bite, and we expect the fishing to only get better and better as we head deeper into fall!
Fishing Report, Kalispell
We’re seeing some fantastic fishing on both the Clark Fork and Blackfoot Rivers as we transition into fall. The Clark Fork, located just an hour and a half from Kalispell, is in a prime state right now, with early morning sessions producing the best action. Anglers can find success using both dry-dropper setups and straight dry flies, hooking into some nice rainbows and cutbows. We’re also starting to see some of those bigger fall fish show up, which is a great sign of things to come.
On the Blackfoot, the fishing is holding up beautifully. While flows are on the low side, the fish are strong, active, and eager to eat. Small mayflies, along with terrestrial patterns like hoppers and ants, are among the most effective flies to use. As the air gets crisper and the days get shorter, we expect the fishing on both of these rivers to get even better.
