Fishing Report, January 16

What a crazy week it’s been. A few days of high winds, snow and pretty cold, then a few days of -30’s and now we’re back in a warming trend. It’s a full 0 degrees today! The cold weather last week helped get a few more options with safe ice. With that said still be cautious on new lakes. Ice is not as thick as you’d think. I’ve seen a few 4 and 3” spots out there. Slush should also be on your radar. There is some serious slush in a few places. I’ve been dealing with some serious slush monsters the last few days. Be prepared to get unstuck… The weather forecast is looking pretty good for the next week or so. Low’s around 0 with highs in the 20’s. Let’s see how things shake out. Fishing Report January 16_1

Fishing Report, Whitefish

Whitefish Lake is looking pretty good after the crazy weather we just had. There is safe ice on the west side of the lake. The east side is very sketchy with only 2″ in most spots. Still use caution when stepping out there. Whitefish Lake commands respect and you should be very cautious when going out there. Check thickness often because ice can go from 4″ to 2″ in no time. Lakers are active and willing to eat. It does seem that you have to work through refusals to find the ones that really want to eat. White tubes with cut bait are still producing eats if you were wondering.

Fishing Report, Kalispell

Kalispell area is looking pretty good right now. Echo Lake is pretty safe but has lots of slush areas. Still use caution out there. I measured a few areas under 4″. Use caution… The lakes west of Kalispell are starting to come online. I’d be looking at the Thompson Chain of Lakes. There should be good ice out there. Trout, big perch, and Pike are on the menu out there… If you head even more north you can expect more good ice. Head west and you’ll be exploring all kinds of lakes with good ice. Most of these spots have good trout fishing. If you’re a trout angler this is where I’d be going.

Guided Trips

Even with the crazy weather we’ve been running guide trips. The ice houses have been keeping everyone warm, comfortable, and catching fish. If you’re looking for a fun day of ice fishing then give me a call, 406-233-9001. I’m always happy to answer any questions you have and figure out a great trip.
