Fishing Report, March 22
Flathead River? Still fishing great, despite the wind’s best efforts. Cutthroat and rainbows are cooperating. The last 5 days have been great on the Flathead. And believe it or not, ice fishing is still happening! We’re just as surprised as you are. But yeah, that’s probably wrapping up late next week. We’ll let you know when the ice finally goes. On the bright side, the mountains are getting a snow day, well… 4 snow days, which is great news for snowpack and water levels later in the year.
Fishing Report, Whitefish
So, ice fishing north of Whitefish is still doing pretty well. The larger perch are showing up now. They’re likely pre-spawn, or possibly even spawning, which explains the size we’re seeing. And the pike have gotten more active in the last week too. They’re definitely pre-spawn, and we expect full spawning in a week or two. Once they go full spawn I would expect them to be laid up and not active at all for a few more weeks.
The Flathead River is a solid option for those looking for a fly fishing trip in the Whitefish Area. See below…
Fishing Report, Kalispell
The Flathead’s running at 3560 cfs, and temps are hitting 42 on sunny days. The forks are starting to rise a bit, so we’ll have to see how that affects things. I think the river should stay pretty stable and fishable for the next week or so. NOAA seems to agree. I’ll keep you posted on the flows. As for the fishing? It’s been solid. Nymphing’s been really good for those bigger cutties and the odd rainbow. The recent water bump brought in a bunch of smaller fish, but there are still some decent sized ones hanging around. Worms and scuds are working well. Dries? I still think you could get some action if you put in the time… and picked a nice sunny day. Go big on the flies if you do.
Guided Trips
Spring’s got us all itching to get out there, and the fish are feeling it too! The Flathead’s fishing well, with some killer nymphing and those dry fly windows popping up. But hey, why stick to just one river? We’re rolling out our Spring Guide Special, and that’s your ticket to explore some seriously awesome spots.
Think consistent action? The Missouri’s crushing it with nymphs and streamers right now. Looking for that classic Montana vibe? The Blackfoot’s streamer game is strong, and we’re betting on some sweet dry fly action in the next week or so.
This spring, maximize your Montana fishing adventure. Our Spring Guide Special unlocks access to incredible rivers beyond the Flathead.
