Fishing Report, May 2

The forecasted warm-up has officially arrived, and it brought the heat! With valley temperatures hitting that 70°F mark, the high-country snow is giving way. This shift in weather has triggered the anticipated spring surge, putting our local freestone rivers into our first push of runoff. While the muddy water is back for now, the snowpack we built up during last week’s storms is providing a healthy “water bank” that will keep our rivers cold and full for the summer season. For now, the focus shifts back to our reliable tailwaters and prime stillwater options.

Fishing Report, Whitefish

Flathead River: The Runoff Surge

Status: Blown Out | Flow: 18,200 CFS | Temp: 44°F

Fishing Report, WhitefishAs expected, the heat has done its work. The North and Middle Forks are currently spiking big, pumping thick mud into the main stem. With flows climbing to 18,200 CFS, the Flathead is officially off the menu for the next several days.

  • The Reality: Visibility is near zero as the system flushes. When the forks are this active, it’s best to let the river do its thing and look toward more stable water.

  • The Silver Lining: This is a natural part of the cycle. These high flows rearrange the riverbed and clean out the gravel, setting us up for a fantastic post-runoff season.

Whitefish Area Stillwater: Spring Gems

With the rivers pushing mud, the local lakes are the clear choice for clarity and active fish. These systems are waking up quickly with the recent sunshine.

  • Vertical Presentations: The jig bite for Lake Trout remains steady. Put away the trolling gear and focus on vertical jigging over deeper structure or mid-depth flats where fish are congregating.

  • Spring Shorelines: The larger lakes in the area are in prime spring mode. Look for rainbows in the shallows and keep an eye out for surface activity as midge hatches intensify.

  • Find the Warmth: Focus on northern shorelines. That extra couple of degrees from direct southern sun exposure is often the difference between a slow day and a banner day.

Fishing Report, Kalispell

Kalispell Stillwater: The Primary Pivot

Fishing Report KalispellThe lakes around the valley are offering excellent consistency right now. The fish are looking for a reason to eat in the warming littoral zones.

  • The Weedbed Highway: While shorelines are great, the real action is over the submerged weedbeds. These are the nurseries where the bugs live and the trout cruise for an easy meal. Focus your drifts over these “underwater forests.”

  • The “Slow & Low” Strategy: Early spring is a game of patience. Use an Indicator Rig with a Balanced Leech (olive or black) as your lead and a Chironomid Nymph as your dropper.

  • The Hang: Before you recast, let your flies hang vertically for 10 seconds. Trout often follow a moving fly and will only commit once it “stalls” and hangs in their face.

  • Master the Depth: If the bite stalls, adjust your indicator in 6-inch increments. Finding the exact cruising lane above the weeds is the secret to spring stillwater success.

Fishing Report, Missouri River

Warming Water & Emerging Bugs

Status: Great | Flow: 3,180 CFS | Temp: 49°F

Fishing Report, Missouri RiverWhile the Flathead pushes mud, the “Mighty Mo” remains the primary destination for consistent action. The water is warming up nicely, with temps peaking at a fish-friendly 49°F on these sunny days.

  • The Hatch: We are in a transition phase. BWO and Midge activity is starting to taper down slightly when the sun is high, but we are seeing the first Caddis showing up on the lower river.

  • Nymphing: Still the most reliable way to bend a rod. The “toilet bowl” eddies and soft inside seams are holding plenty of fish. Run a Sowbug or Scud lead with a BWO nymph or Green Machine trailer.

  • Streamers: Don’t be afraid to hunt. Flashy patterns with a fast retrieve are still moving fish in both the deep slots and the faster oxygenated water.
