Fishing Report, October 1

TGIF! The fishing scene here in Northwest Montana is fantastic as we roll into October. We’ve been blessed with unbelievable weather lately, and the good forecast promises more of the same. The Flathead, Clark Fork, and Blackfoot Rivers are all holding steady and providing solid action. Dry-dropper rigs and streamer fishing are proving highly effective across all three rivers. Get ready for some great fall fishing as we expect conditions to remain excellent through the weekend and beyond.

Fishing Report, Whitefish

Fishing Report, WhitefishThe Flathead River near Whitefish is settling into fantastic shape as we enter the heart of fall fishing season. The river is running clean, and the flows are perfect for floating. Water temperatures are cooling nicely, peaking in the low to mid-50s on sunny afternoons, which has the trout feeling very active.

We are consistently finding great numbers of Westslope Cutthroat, and their eagerness to look up makes for great sport. Dry-dropper rigs are absolutely ruling the day, particularly with attractor patterns on top and a nymph riding underneath. For subsurface work, small stoneflies and familiar mayfly nymphs are getting the most attention. With the beautiful fall weather, expect the Flathead to offer some of the most rewarding and uncrowded trips of the entire year.

Fishing Report, Kalispell

Fishing Report, KalispellHeading over toward the Kalispell area’s other great rivers, the Clark Fork and Blackfoot are both fishing exceptionally well right now. Clear water and steady, cool flows from the consistently good weather have the fish aggressive and on the hunt. The Blackfoot is a prime location for streamer fishing this time of year, with larger cutthroat and rainbow trout moving to the fly. On the Clark Fork, bigger rainbows and brown trout are being hooked using dry-dropper setups, showing a great mix of surface and subsurface action. Hatches of Blue-Winged Olives (BWOs) and Mohags are becoming more consistent on cloudy days, but the terrestrial bite—like hoppers and ants—is still producing fish on the sunnier stretches. Focusing on a dry-dropper or streamer will cover most situations and should ensure a successful day on either of these classic Montana rivers as we move deeper into October.
